In the beauty industry, the packaging is just as important as the product. A mirror-effect cap, a bottle with gold highlights, or a tube of mascara with a chrome finish convey quality and brand identity even before the consumer opens the package. Why PVD metallization is strategic in cosmetic packaging
Vacuum metallization deposits a layer of metal—typically aluminum—just 70–100 nanometers thick, resulting in a brilliant mirror finish with reflectivity starting at 85%. This coating does not alter the surface roughness or geometry of the base part, thus enhancing its appearance without compromising its functional tolerances (cap threads, closure fits, pump seats).
For decorators, this translates into a wide range of options: chrome, gold, and copper effects; glossy, matte, or satin finishes; and custom colors achieved with basecoats and topcoats. Perfume caps and bottles, mascara tubes, lipsticks, and makeup cases and jars become premium items. It is a high-value-added service for small- and medium-sized components produced in large volumes and subject to strict aesthetic standards.
A comparison of PVD technologies: which system for which need

Thermal evaporation — AM/KW series
The metal (usually aluminum) is placed on tungsten heating elements, which, when heated, cause it to evaporate; the vapor then condenses on the surface of the parts. It is one of the most cost-effective PVD technologies, offering excellent penetration even on complex geometries: ideal for large batches of caps and components where a shiny aluminum finish is the desired result. Sputtering (magnetron) — Fast-Met, Smart-Met, Line-Met, and Twist-Met
A solid target is bombarded by ions in a plasma: the “sputtered” atoms are deposited onto the substrate, forming an extremely uniform and adherent film, using magnetron cathodes. Sputtering allows for the deposition of a wider range of metals than aluminum and superior-quality finishes, including colored ones. It is the go-to choice when repeatability, color control, and high-end aesthetics are essential. Combined technology — Combi-Met
Arzuffi Combi-Met systems combine sputtering (including reactive sputtering) and thermal evaporation in a single chamber, offering maximum flexibility in surface finishing. PECVD plasma — Plasma-Cube
PECVD generates nanometer-thick films from plasma-activated gaseous precursors. In cosmetic packaging, it is particularly valuable for pretreatment and functionalization: cleaning and degreasing, activation of plastic surfaces, increasing wettability to improve the adhesion of coatings and metal, as well as hydrophilic/hydrophobic and anti-fog treatments. Criteria for choosing the right system
Beyond the technology itself, there are certain factors that influence the decision to invest in a coater. It is worth discussing these with the manufacturer as early as the design phase.
- Productivity and cycle time: automation of the loading and unloading of workpiece-holding bars, which directly affects productivity and cost per piece;
- Substrates and geometries: plastics (PP, PC, PE, PS, PETG, ABS) and glass require different pretreatments and parameters; the system must be able to handle the materials and shapes in your production mix, including 3D geometries;

Sustainability: vacuum coating as a green alternative to electroplating
Traditional electroplating uses hexavalent chromium, which is highly toxic to people and the environment and is increasingly subject to regulatory restrictions. High-vacuum metallization is a “dry” process: no electroplating baths, virtually no toxic liquid waste, significantly reduced atmospheric emissions, and lower energy consumption. With the addition of recyclable lacquers, metallized packaging also becomes more aligned with brands’ sustainability goals. For a decorator, this is a concrete selling point: offering the chrome effect the market demands, without the environmental and regulatory burdens of electroplating.
